A cobbled lane between whitewashed port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia with oak barrels by a cellar door and the Ponte Luís I behind, where Porto wine cellar tours begin
Porto Wine Cellar Tours
Porto wine cellar tours cross the river to the port houses that line the Gaia bank of the Douro, across the Ponte Luís I from Ribeira. Each tour opens the doors of one house with its own casks, building and pours of 2 to 3 ports. What separates them is the house itself: a working cooperage, a 13-language audio guide, a live fado show, a private cellar of 16,000 old bottles, or a guide who walks you through 3 houses in one afternoon.
Quick answerThe pick, the lowest price and the 3-house walks

The lowest starting price on the bookable listings is $22 at Real Companhia Velha. Guided walks that cover 3 port houses with 7 tastings start at $61.78. Cellars that sell their own visits price theirs from €20 to €23.

Port Wine Cellar Tours in Porto
Every price below is the "from" price, the lowest adult rate on the listing. Some cellars charge more depending on which tasting option you pick, and the cards say so. Most single-cellar visits meet at the cellar door in Vila Nova de Gaia, while the guided walks meet on the Porto side of the river. Tastings are for adults, as 18 is the legal drinking age in Portugal, and children are priced separately on some listings. The platform handles payment, and free cancellation runs to 24 hours before departure on most listings, with 3 days required on the fado evening.

A guided visit through a family-owned ageing cellar, then White, LBV and Reserve Tawny ports. Snacks are sold separately and are not part of the ticket.
A 30-minute guided tour of the Cálem cellars, then a 45-minute live Fado concert with two ports. Evening departures at 6:00 PM or 6:30 PM depending on the season.

Cellar Tours Side by Side: Price, Hours and Ports
The figures below come from each listing: the bookable price, the listed duration, how many ports are poured and the shape of the visit. Read it as a first filter on Porto wine cellar tours: budget, time and the kind of tasting.
A single-cellar visit costs $22-$34 on most cards and shows you one house at your own pace. The 3-cellar walks cost about twice that and add a guide and two more houses to the afternoon. Cancellation terms are on each card. Figures current for in Q4 2026.
Check Dates at Cockburn's
The coopers work Monday to Friday from 9 am to 4:30 pm, so a weekday visit sees them at the benches, though one reviewer notes they break for lunch around 12. The listing is flagged as likely to sell out.
Each port house in Gaia is its own world, with a different building, story and set of pours. This section takes the seven single-cellar visits one by one so you can match the house to your day.

Seven Cellars at a Glance
The figures below come from each listing: the price, the listed duration, the number of ports poured and what sets the house apart. Check the card for the full tasting options and meeting points before you book.
Cockburn's Port Lodge at R. de Serpa Pinto 346 is the largest port cellar in the historic quarter of Gaia, and the guided visit runs 1.5 hours for $34. You walk the cellars museum, the coopers' workshop and the longest ageing gallery of any port cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia, past 6,518 seasoned oak barrels plus the equivalent of 10,056 more in tones and vats. Every tasting option pours 3 ports: the Classic gives Special Reserve, Late Bottled Vintage and 10 Year Old, and chocolate, tawny, cheese and premium options exist.
It suits anyone who wants to see port being made, not just stored, since this is the only open cooperage in Gaia and the coopers work Monday to Friday 9 am to 4:30 pm. The visit is rated 4.8 from 4,417 reviews. Free cancellation runs to 24 hours before, and reviewers note the guide can be hard to hear in larger groups, so stay near the front in the galleries.
Taylor's: Go at Your Own Pace with an Audio Guide
Taylor's has made port since 1692, and its listing credits the house with inventing the Late Bottled Vintage style. The card is the most reviewed on the site, 4.6 from 5,042 reviews, at $28 for a self-guided visit of 2 to 3 hours. There is no live guide: you scan a QR code and the audio guide plays on your phone in 13 languages, so bring headphones and a charged phone, and reviewers say the volume runs low.
The tasting is 3 ports, a Chip Dry Extra Dry White, a Late Bottled Vintage and a 10 Year Old Tawny, served in the garden, and children get a grape juice from the Douro Valley. That makes this the easiest house for families. You book a date and hour and move at your own pace.
The address is Rua do Choupelo 250 in Vila Nova de Gaia, and free cancellation runs to 24 hours before.
Graham's: the 1890 Lodge and the Vintage Room
Graham's runs the most expensive card among the single-cellar visits at $78, for a 2-hour guided visit limited to 10 participants. The working lodge dates to 1890, holds over 2,000 pipes and 40 large oak vats, and looks over Porto and the two-tier bridge. The visit ends in the Vintage Room, styled as a historic library, with a standard or Super Premium tasting of Graham's vintage ports and tawnies, though the listing does not state how many wines each includes and shows one from price for both.
It suits travelers who want a small group and a serious tasting room rather than a budget ticket. The group cap of 10 keeps it quiet, and a reviewer advises sharing two of the Super Premium tastings, one ruby and one tawny. Meet at the visitor center, Rua do Agro 141.
The listing is flagged as likely to sell out, and free cancellation runs to 24 hours before.
Poças: a Family House with Three Ports
Poças is in its fourth generation of the same Portuguese family and welcomes about 28,000 visitors a year. The card costs $26.31 for a 1.5-hour guided visit through the ageing cellar, in groups of up to 20, and ends with 3 ports: a White, a Late Bottled Vintage and a Reserve Tawny. It suits travelers who want a proper family house at a mid-range price without the crowds of the biggest lodges.
Sausage and cheese selections are not part of the ticket, they are bought separately by phoning the cellar. The address is Rua Visconde das Devesas 168 in Vila Nova de Gaia, public transport is nearby, and the rating is 4.7 from 424 reviews with free cancellation to 24 hours before.
Cálem: the Cellar, then Live Fado
The Cálem card, rated 4.5 from 4,014 reviews, bundles two evenings in one for $31: a 30-minute guided tour of the cellars, then a 45-minute live fado concert with a male and female vocalist, a Portuguese guitar and a classical guitar. Two ports are served during the performance, a white port and a special reserve. It suits travelers who want music with their port and are happy that the cellar part is short.
The English visit runs at 6:00 PM from November to March and 6:30 PM from April to October, at Av. de Diogo Leite 344 on the Gaia riverfront. One detail matters: free cancellation closes 3 days before, not 24 hours, and there is no reserve now and pay later option. Guests are asked to stay silent during the fado, and a reviewer found the two glasses on the small side.
Burmester: Short, Riverside, with Pairings
Burmester sits right on the river at Largo Dom Luís I, beside the Ponte Luís I, and was founded in 1750 by Henry Burmester and John Nash. The card is the shortest single-cellar visit at 45 minutes to 1 hour, for $26, and suits travelers short on time or staying on the Ribeira side. A guided visit covers the cellars, a renewed museum and a sensory experience, then you pick a tasting option.
The base option pours 2 ports, a Fine White and a 10 Year Old Tawny, while other options reach 3 ports with chocolate, cheese or almond cookie pairings. Wine is not served to anyone under 18. The rating is 4.5 from 2,069 reviews, the $26 is the base fare and the listing does not show each option's price.
Free cancellation runs to 24 hours before.
Real Companhia Velha: the Private Cellar of 16,000 Bottles
Real Companhia Velha has the lowest starting price of any card on the site at $22, for a guided tour of 1 to 2 hours. The draw is the private cellar of the Silva Reis family, with more than 16,000 bottles of rare Vintage Ports, the oldest dating to 1765, alongside the ageing casks of the two-hundred-year-old house. The tasting covers selected Royal Oporto premium ports, though the number of wines is not stated, and a reviewer was served 4 ports with crackers and nuts.
The rating is 4.8 from 689 reviews. One practical warning: the meeting point depends on the option you select, and two reviewers say the listed address sent them a block away, so confirm it at booking. The visit is not suitable for wheelchair users, free cancellation runs to 24 hours before, and the listing is flagged as likely to sell out.
Tours That Take You Into Several Cellars
One cellar shows one house's style. These guided walks and combined outings move between cellars, so you can taste the differences in a single booking.

Three Houses With a Guide
Two guided walks cover three port houses each, with all entry tickets and tastings included. The prices below are the card prices on this site, and the ports column sums up what each listing includes.
A guide explains the styles side by side as you move, so a tawny from one house makes sense next to a ruby from another. The Three Port Houses Walking Tour puts a small producer in a tasting room next to a traditional cellar and a modern museum, and ends with a lesson in tasting port the way professionals do. The Small-Group Port Cellars Tour keeps to 12 guests and three producers within 400 m, so the walking is easy, but it starts on the dot and latecomers cannot catch up, because the operator does not hand out the producers' addresses.
Meeting points are easy to find: Porto Walkers gathers at Rua da Ribeira Negra, by the pillars of the old Pensil bridge next to the lower deck of the Dom Luís bridge on the Porto side, and the guide wears red. CD Porto Tours meets in front of the tourism office, under an umbrella, 10 minutes before the start. Eat a proper meal first, because 7 sweet fortified pours in 2.5 to 4 hours is a lot.
A Cellar Inside a Longer Outing
Three listings use a cellar as one stop in a bigger half day. The Porto History Walk with Port Cellar costs $38.90 and lasts 4 hours: a guided walk through the historic center past Avenida dos Aliados, Clérigos Tower, São Bento station and the Sé Cathedral, then a bus from Batalha Square to a traditional port cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia for a visit and a tasting of three wines. Groups run up to 27. The listing names two meeting points, Calçada de Vandoma next to Porto Cathedral and Rua Mouzinho da Silveira 352 in front of São Bento station, so confirm at booking. The Porto Walk, Cellar and Six Bridges Cruise costs $62.92 for a 4-hour old town walk with a cellar visit and tasting, and a Six Bridges Cruise ticket you can use at any departure the same day.
Is World of Wine in Porto worth it? Be clear about what the WOW Port and Wine Experience is: a self-guided wine museum with sensory stations and an audio guide, not a cellar. The $22.88 ticket includes a guided tasting of 3 wines, a red, a white and a port, with grape juice for children. It is a good rainy-hour option or a family stop, and an extra Wine School session adds 3 tastings for €5. If you want barrels and lodges, pick one of the single-cellar visits instead.
Prices, durations and inclusions come from the listings on this site.
Cellars That Sell Their Own Visits
Several Gaia cellars are not in the booking catalog and sell their visits on their own sites, and a few take walk-ins at a tasting bar. The prices below are the cellars' own, taken from their official pages. Every cellar is placed on the port wine cellars map, and Sandeman, Ferreira and Ramos Pinto have pages of their own: Sandeman Porto, Ferreira, Ramos Pinto.
€23 · 50 min
Sandeman
The cheapest option is the Porto Sandeman Visit at €23 for 50 minutes with 3 ports, a white, a ruby and a tawny. The Sandeman 1790 Visit costs €35 for 1h30 and 5 ports. From €13 · walk-in
Ramos Pinto
Walk-in tastings without a visit need no reservation and start at €13 for the Beginner flight. A guided visit of the museum and cellars with 3 ports costs €20, the Prestige visit €30 and the Heritage visit €50. Children aged 12 to 17 pay €10 and under 12 go free. The visitor centre is open every day 10:00-18:00. Families should also look at Taylor's Port Cellars Tour, which serves grape juice.
Quevedo
From €14 · 40 min
Quevedo is a family lodge where tastings run 40 minutes with a minimum of 2 people. The Douro D.O.C. Discovery is €14 and the Porto Discovery is €16 with four ports, and the Porto Special Selection is €29. Opening hours are 11:00-19:00 in the colder months and 12:00-20:00 in the warmer ones, and there is live fado on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Prefer a guided walk with a fixed price? Check the Small-Group Port Cellars Tour.
Churchill's
Mon-Sat · pay on site
Churchill's Lodge opens Monday to Saturday 10:00-18:00, with the last visit at 17:00, and the basic Lodge Tour and Tasting is paid on site, with no price shown online. The priced experiences start from €75 per person with cheese pairing. The 1982 Bar in the lodge garden opens from Wednesday to Sunday afternoons. Compare the houses in the single-cellar visits guide.
IVDP Port Wine Bar
Weekdays · Porto side
The IVDP, the Port wine institute, runs a visitor centre on the Porto side at Rua Ferreira Borges 27, with a learning centre, a tour of the laboratories and tasting chamber, and a self-service bar with eight ports chosen via a magnetic card. The shop and tasting room open 10:00-19:30 and close on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Prices are not listed on the site. For the styles it explains, read what you taste in a port cellar.

Crossing the River to the Cellars
Almost every port lodge sits on the Gaia bank, and getting there from Ribeira is part of the outing. The fares below come from the official Gaia Cable Car and Metro do Porto pages. Fares and seasonal hours are on the Gaia cable car page, and the areas to sleep near the cellars on hotels in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Pick a crossing to match your legs and your budget. Walking the bridge is free in both directions, and the metro and cable car both start from the Jardim do Morro end.

Hours and a Route That Saves Your Legs
The cable car runs long hours that stretch with the season: 10:00-18:00 through most of the year, 10:00-19:00 in the two shoulder windows and 10:00-20:00 in the warm high season, and it closes only on Christmas Day. Andante tickets are not valid on it, and a family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children costs €22.50 return. The bridge itself is a double-deck iron arch built from 1881 to 1886, with the light rail and pedestrians on the upper deck and public transport and pedestrians below.
The order that saves your legs: take line D or walk the upper deck to Jardim do Morro, ride the cable car down to Cais de Gaia, work your way along the riverbank past the lodges, then walk back to Ribeira on the flat lower deck. If you would rather let someone else do the logistics, the Porto Walk, Cellar and Six Bridges Cruise adds a river cruise ticket to a cellar visit.
What You Taste in a Port Cellar
Port is a fortified wine from the Demarcated Region of the Douro, usually 19-22% vol, and the IVDP sorts it into a few families. The table uses the IVDP's own categories. Each family has its own page: types of port wine, tawny port, LBV port and how to drink port.

White
White
From extra dry to very sweet, plus Lágrima
Rosé
Rosé
Lightly macerated red grapes, drunk young and chilled or with ice
How to Drink Port
Port runs at 19-22% vol, so small pours are the norm and the cellars pour them that way. Rosé port is made to be drunk young, chilled or over ice. White port ranges from extra dry to very sweet, and a light dry white port carries a minimum alcohol of 16.5%.
Follow the order the cellars use in their tastings: a white first, then a ruby or a Late Bottled Vintage, then a tawny. That order runs through the pours on the Cockburn's Port Lodge Tour, the Poças Port Cellar Tour and most of the others.
Why the Cellars Sit in Gaia
The Douro Demarcated Region was created on 10 September 1756 under the Marquis of Pombal, with the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro. The barrels travelled downriver on rabelo boats, flat-bottomed wooden cargo boats built for the Douro, and the companies aged their ports in the Gaia lodges across the river from Porto. The boats still race on 24 June for São João, and the port houses keep rabelos moored on the river today.
The IVDP Port Wine Bar on the Porto side explains this history in its learning centre.

Before You Walk Into a Cellar
Do
Book a weekday if you want to see Cockburn's coopers at work, because the cooperage only runs Monday to Friday from 9 am to 4:30 pm, with a lunch break around midday
Book the 3-house walks ahead, because Small-Group Port Cellars Tour caps at 12 guests and Three Port Houses Walking Tour at 18
Bring ID if you look young, because tastings are for 18 and over and the CD Porto walk refuses entry to anyone under 16
Eat a real meal before a 7-tasting tour, because port is a sweet fortified wine at 19-22% vol and the pours add up
Check whether your visit is guided or self-guided, because Taylor's Port Cellars Tour plays its audio guide on your phone, so bring headphones and a charged battery
Don't
Don't expect hotel pickup, because none of the cellar tours on this site includes it
Don't bring under-16s on the Small-Group Port Cellars Tour, because the listing is adults only from 16 and everyone needs a reservation even if they do not drink
Don't cancel the Cálem Cellar Tour with Fado at the last minute, because free cancellation closes 3 days before, not 24 hours like the others
Don't mistake the WOW Port and Wine Experience for a cellar visit, because it is a wine museum where only one of the 3 wines is a port
Guided Cellar Tour or Walk-In Tasting
Both work. The honest trade-offs are about structure, access and money.
What we genuinely like
+A booked tour gives you a fixed slot, so you are not queuing for a walk-in place on a busy day
+A guide or audio guide explains what you are standing in, from the cellars museum to the ageing galleries
+Some spaces you only see on a tour, like the open cooperage at Cockburn's or the Silva Reis private collection of more than 16,000 bottles at Real Companhia Velha
+Most listings on this site offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before
The honest downsides
−Some cellars take walk-ins cheaply, and Ramos Pinto pours a tasting flight without any visit from €13
−A single cellar visit shows one house's style only, while the 3-house walks cover 7 ports across 3 producers
−The Cálem fado evening needs 3 days of notice to cancel, so it is the least flexible ticket here
Who it's NOT for: Not for anyone who wants to drift from door to door with no fixed time: that is what the walk-in bars are for.

Porto Wine Cellar Tours: Your Questions
Which are the best wine cellars in Porto?
The pick on this site is Cockburn's in Vila Nova de Gaia, rated 4.8 from 4,417 reviews, with the largest lodge in Gaia's historic quarter and the only open cooperage there. Taylor's is the most reviewed at 5,042 reviews. See the seven cellars compared in the single-cellar visits guide.
How much does a port cellar tour cost?
The bookable tours on this site start at $22 for Real Companhia Velha and $34 for the Cockburn's pick, and the 3-house walks cost $61.78 and $64.07. On the cellars' own sites, visits start from €20 with a visit or €13 for a walk-in tasting, listed in cellars that sell their own visits.
Do you need to book a port cellar tour in advance?
For the guided tours, yes, because the small-group walks cap at 12 and 18 guests and several listings are flagged as likely to sell out. You can also compare the full catalog of tours and book a dated slot. A few places take walk-ins, like Ramos Pinto's tasting bar.
How many port cellars can you visit in one afternoon?
Often yes. Taylor's serves children a grape juice from the Douro Valley, WOW pours a grape juice tasting, and the Porto History Walk with Port Cellar prices children separately. The CD Porto walk is the exception: it is adults only from 16.
What port wine should I buy in Portugal?
Match the style to the taste, using the IVDP families: rubies for fruit, Late Bottled Vintage and Vintage for single-year wines that age in bottle, tawnies and Colheitas for nutty wood age, and white from extra dry to very sweet. Every cellar pours examples during the visits listed in what you taste in a port cellar, and each lodge's own shop sells what it poured you.
Start with the pick: Cockburn's Port Lodge Tour, 1.5 hours in the largest cellar in Gaia's historic quarter, with 3 ports in every option.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and the price is $34.
